Navigating the Risks of AI: Safeguarding our Children's Future and the American Dream

By: Levino L Johnson, Ph.D.

As we continue to embrace technological advancements, we must also consider their consequences on our society, particularly on our children's future and their ability to achieve the American dream. The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in various industries has sparked concerns about its potential impact on the job market, social inequality, and national security. Without proper regulation and legal framework, AI could alter the course of our children's future and potentially hinder their ability to obtain the American dream.

According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute, up to 800 million jobs worldwide could be lost to automation by 2030, with low-wage workers being the most vulnerable to job displacement (Chui, Manyika, & Miremadi, 2018). This could harm our children's future job prospects, limiting their ability to achieve upward mobility and the American dream. AI algorithms can also perpetuate and amplify existing biases and discrimination, such as hiring, lending, and criminal justice. For example, studies have shown that AI algorithms used in hiring can be biased against women and minorities (Dastin, 2018). Such biases could create barriers to equal opportunities for our children, ultimately undermining the values of the American dream. Additionally, AI can increase income inequality by automating low-wage jobs and enhancing the productivity of high-wage jobs. This could lead to a concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few individuals, further exacerbating social and economic inequalities (Ford, 2015). If not addressed, such a trend could limit the opportunities for our children to achieve upward mobility and the American dream.

Ultimately, the need for effective policy and legal frameworks to address the potential risks of AI to our children's future cannot be overstated. Policymakers need to be well informed and proactive in developing effective frameworks that ensure AI is developed and deployed in a way that's fair, transparent, and beneficial to all. However, creating such frameworks is not an easy task, and it requires expertise and foresight. There's a growing need for policymakers to be more educated on the potential risks of AI and the importance of developing effective policy and legal frameworks. For instance, the Algorithmic Accountability Act, currently under consideration by the United States Congress, would require companies to conduct bias assessments of their algorithms and report on their impact (Weise, 2019). Such initiatives could help ensure that AI is developed and deployed fairly, transparently, and beneficial to all.

In conclusion

The potential risks of AI to our children's future and their ability to achieve the American dream are significant and multifaceted. While AI holds great promise, it also brings significant risks and challenges that must be addressed through sound policy and legal frameworks backed by peer-reviewed research. Policymakers must be well-informed and proactive in developing effective frameworks for AI that ensure its development and deployment in a fair, transparent, and beneficial way to all. Failure to do so could lead to a generation of children facing unequal opportunities and barriers to success, undermining the core values of the American dream.
